Come participate in the lacquerware workshops where you can experience e-tsuke (drawing), chinkin (carving) and fuki-urushi (lacquer applying and wiping).
Step by step instruction will be given by the Echizen lacquer artisans.
※Fee-based workshops. Reservation is required.

E-tsuke (drawing) experience

You will experience drawing a design on an item using a paint brush. You can use your own design or can select one from design patterns. No need to worry about allergic reaction to lacquer.

The workshop fee includes the fee for one item.
Minimum of two participants are required.

The item you made can be taken home with you on the same day.
Workshop Fee 1500 yen
Item: One item can be selected from a bowl, a photo frame, a coffee tray, a hand mirror and a mini hand mirror.


Your original item can be made if you prepare your original design according to the size of the item you wish to work on.
Not good at drawing? Don’t worry! You can choose a design from various design patterns that we offer.

Chinkin (carving) experience

You will experience drawing a design on an item using a chinkin knife.
The workshop fee includes the fee for one item.
Minimum of two participants are required.

Since lacquer is used, you might have allergic reaction to the lacquer.
※ The lacquer will be applied by an artisan and you will not touch the lacquer.
The item you made can be taken home with you on the same day.
Workshop Fee 2000 yen
Item: One item can be selected from a mini hand mirror (red) and a lacquer plate with low platform (dark red or red).


Your original item can be made if you prepare your original design according to the size of the item you wish to work on.
Not good at drawing? Don’t worry! You can choose your design from various design patterns that we offer.

Fuki-urushi (lacquer applying and wiping) experience

You will experience applying and wiping raw lacquer on the kiji (wood base) material.

Lacquer applying and wiping process includes the first applying, the second applying and the third applying. The second and third applying can be processed after the lacquer of the first applying is dried. The participants may revisit the atelier to process the second and third applying. (It takes about 1 week for the lacquer to dry.) If the participant is not able to revisit, the item can be finished by an artisan at the workshop and will be sent to you (the participant will pay the postal fee).

Although plastic gloves, aprons and arm covers will be provided for you to used, you might have allergic reaction to the lacquer.

Please be aware that the item you made cannot be taken home with you on the same day.
※ If you wish to continue the lacquer applying process at your home, please talk to the staff.

Item: One item can be selected from a bowl and a round tray.

About reservation

Minimum of two participants are required.
For a group of ten or less participants, please make the reservation 2 days in prior.
For a group more than ten participants, please make the reservation 10 days or more in prior.
Each workshop is about 1 hour long.
