Nakanuri and Uwanuri

The technique of lacquer applying which brings out strength and beauty

Traditional technique of lacquer applying

Nuri (lacquer applying) process After the shitaji process, lacquer is applied in layers in the nakanuri process and in the uwanuri process.
In the uwanuri process, refined lacquer is used. Such finishing of surface with uwanuri process is referred to as “nuritate” or “hananuri”. After the uwanuri process, the surface glaze may be brought out by the technique called roiro where the surface is repeatedly polished with charcoal.
