Artisan’s Atelier

What is Artisan’s Atelier? This is an atelier built with the purpose of training the artisans and to hand down the traditional techniques of Echizen lacquerware to the next generation.
A hundred-year-old resident building in Azouda area in Kawada is used as the atelier. The appearance of the building is designed to fit in the traditional surrounding scenery so as not the disturb the atmosphere of the area. The columns, beams and floors inside the building are coated with lacquer and the original sliding doors and shoji paper screens are reused.
In such way, the Artisan’s Atelier is built by effectively using the local resources in consideration of maintaining the atmosphere of the area.
