Skills of maki-e(design drawing)

The technique of maki-e(design drawing) include various skills and different skills are used according to the designs and the ways of expression. These skills include hira-maki-e, taka-maki-e, togidashi-maki-e, shishiai-togidashi-maki-e, etc.
A design is drawin with a brush using lacquer, gold powder is sprinkled over, lacquer is applied over again and the surface is smoothened. In such way, a three dimensional design can be expressed.

Various techniques of maki-e(design drawing)

Hira-maki-e
Hira-maki-e is the most basic skill among the skills of maki-e(design drawing) technique. The outline is drawn with a brush using e-urushi lacquer which is made by mixing roiro(polishing)-urushi lacquer and Bengala red and then, apply the lacquer inside so as to be flat. After the lacquer is dried, gold powder is sprinkled over with cotton. This skill is used to express a two dimensional flat design. Cross-section of hira-maki-e
Taka-maki-e
A design is drawn by using e-urushi lacquer and then, the design is made to bulge by placing sumi-ko(charcoal) powder and suzu-ko (tin) powder thereon. After dried, lacquer is applied over to make the design bulge more and then, gold powder is sprinkled over and smoothened. Since the design is bulged, this skill is used to express a three dimensional design. Cross-section of taka-maki-e
Togidashi-maki-e
A design is drawn by using e-urushi lacquer and then, relatively rough gold powder and silver powder are sprinkled over. Lacquer is applied over again and then after dried, the surface is smoothened to bring out the design of gold powder. There is also a skill called “kai-togidashi” where lacquer is applied to the entire surface and then smoothened so that the gold powder and the applied lacquer be flat. Shishiai-togidashi-maki-e
The skills of taka-maki-e and togidashi-meki-e are combined in this skill. The design is made to bulge as in the skill of taka-maki-e and then, the part where lacquer is applied and the bulged part are smoothened to form a smooth inclination. With this skill, a different type of three dimensional expression is possible. Cross-section of shishiai-togidashi-maki-e
